"I have no use for cranks who despise music, bcause it is a gift of God. Music drives away the Devil and makes people happy; they forget thereby all wrath, unchastity, arrogance, and the like. Next after theology, I give to music the highest place and the greatest honor."
The hymn "Vater unser im Himmelreich” is a setting of the Lord’s prayer by Martin Luther. The chorale’s composer is unknown; however, it is believed that Luther adapted it from a melody dating to the Middle Ages. The two first appeared in print together in 1539. Many composers wrote organ settings of this chorale during the Baroque period and beyond. During the next few weeks, as Don presents a sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, we will hear several of these settings.
Hymn translation:
1. Our Father, Thou in heaven above, 5. Give us this day our daily bread
Who bidets us to dwell in love. And let us all be clothed and fed.
As brethren of one family, From war and strife be our defense,
To cry in every need to Thee, From famine and from pestilence,
Teach us no thoughtless word to say, That we may live in godly peace,
But from our inmost heart to pray. Free from all care and avarice.
2. Thy name be hallowed. Help us, Lord, 6. Forgive our sins, Lord, we implore,
In purity to keep Thy Word, Remove from us their burden sore,
That to the glory of Thy Name As we their trespasses forgive
We walk before Thee free from blame. Who by offenses us do grieve.
Let no false doctrine us pervert; Thus let us dwell in charity
All poor, deluded souls convert. And serve our brother willingly.
3. Thy kingdom come. Thine let it be 7. Into temptation lead us not.
In time and in eternity. When evil foes against us plot
Let Thy good Spirit e'er be nigh And vex our sold on every hand,
Our hearts with graces to supply. Oh, give us strength that we may stand
Break Satan's power, defeat his rage; Firm in the faith, a well-armed host,
Preserve Thy Church from age to age. Through comfort of the Holy Ghost!
4. Thy gracious will on earth be done 8. From evil, Lord, deliver us;
As 'tis in heaven before Thy throne; The times and days are perilous.
Obedience in our weal and woe Redeem us from eternal death,
And patience in all grief bestow. And when we yield our dying breath,
Curb flesh and blood and every ill Console us, grant us calm release,
That sets itself against Thy will. And take our souls to Thee in peace.
9. Amen, that is, So shall it be.
Confirm our faith and hope in thee
That we may doubt not, but believe
What here we ask we shall receive.
Thus in Thy name and at Thy word
We say: Amen. Oh, hear us, Lord! Amen.
